Kos Town: Where Everything’s Just Around the Corner

Most people visiting Kos choose to stay in Kos Town or nearby Lambi. I did too. This is the island’s beating heart, where old and new blend in the most delightful way. In Kos Town, you can wander for hours through narrow, atmospheric streets. Think of a boutique full of handmade jewelry, or a shop where the scent of fresh olive oil and herbs draws you inside. Trendy clothing stores alternate with small galleries showcasing local artists. And everywhere—truly everywhere—you’ll find terraces serving fresh coffee, fine wine, and plates of mezze that make you slow down automatically.
In the evening, the city takes on a different mood. Lanterns are lit. Light dances across the façades. Suddenly, it seems like everyone is outside. Some enjoy cocktails by the harbor, others sit at tables in alleys flickering with candlelight. And those who want to, dance long into the night.

Right in the center, you stumble over history. Literally. The ruins of the Agora sit there, tucked between shops and terraces. You wander freely among columns and mosaics. It feels like an open-air museum. And then there’s the famous plane tree. The Tree of Hippocrates. Legend has it that he taught his students here. Is it true? Who knows. But it sounds too good not to believe.

On the edge of the town, the walls of the Knights’ Castle tower above everything. Partly ruined, yet still imposing. You climb to the top and look out over the harbor. The sea sparkles. Boats gently rock back and forth. On clear days, you can even see part of Turkey across the water. It’s a place to wander, pause, and imagine what life here must have been like centuries ago.
Cycling on Kos: Sunscreen, Shades, Saddle … and Go!

Kos is Greece’s ultimate cycling island. And that’s no exaggeration. The island is ready for it. Wide bike paths, flat routes, and one scenic stop after another for photos—or just to take it all in. The sea. The olive trees. That little house with the bright blue shutters.
One of the nicest rides leads to Tigaki Beach. Easy cycling, wind in your face, and at the end, the beach awaits. You unroll your towel and dive into the water. Or ride along the coast to Psalidi, where the sea accompanies you almost the entire way. Stop at a beach bar for a delicious lunch, then keep cycling. No rush.
For the real adventurers, there’s the climb to Zia. It’s challenging, especially under the midday sun. But with an e-bike, it’s doable. Or, like me, take the bus. No shame. That way, you save enough energy to fully enjoy Zia itself, with its stunning sunsets and incredible food. Truly fantastic.
Food & Drinks: From Beach Vibes to Cozy Taverns

After a day full of discoveries, there’s only one thing you want: to sit down and enjoy. Enjoy the food, the drinks, the moment. Kos is full of places where this works perfectly.
Coco Beach in Kos Town is one of those spots where the holiday feeling hits immediately. Your feet almost touch the sand. The sea gently rolls in. On your plate: fresh lobster, perfectly grilled steak, or another Mediterranean dish that looks like it came straight from a cookbook. Everything is fresh, the presentation is flawless, and the service is friendly without being pushy. It’s relaxed, yet just a little more special than your average beach bar.

For a chic evening out with an incredible view of the sea and city, Omega Sky Bar is a must. This rooftop bar on the boulevard is the place for a sunset cocktail. Order an ice-cold espresso martini or a Golddigger with a golden twist. The sky slowly shifts from orange to pink to purple. The city below begins to sparkle. The DJ plays just the right music. And you think: this moment couldn’t be better. Stylish, yet above all, wonderfully relaxed and fun.

But maybe you prefer something cozier. Something more authentic. Then head to Okeanos in Psalidi. This restaurant sits right by the sea. So close you can hear the water lapping against the rocks. Meanwhile, you dip your pita into the creamiest tzatziki you’ve ever tasted. Everything here radiates warmth. The owners cook with love, using vegetables from their own garden, and you can taste it in every bite. No fuss, no frills. Just good food in a place where you immediately feel at home. And as a bonus, there’s a stunning sunset to enjoy as well.
Beaches to Brighten Your Day

Finding a great beach on Kos isn’t difficult. In fact, you hardly need to leave Kos Town. Right next to the city lies Lambi Beach. Walk or cycle there, roll out your towel, and your day is made. The water is clear, the beach well-kept, and the atmosphere just right. Relaxed, yet never boring. Order a fresh smoothie, read a good book, or simply close your eyes for a while. And it feels absolutely wonderful.

Looking for a little slice of paradise? Head to Paradise Beach and yes, it totally lives up to the name. Tucked away on the island’s south coast, it takes a bit of a drive to get there, but every minute is worth it. The vibe? Wonderfully laid-back. Renting a sunbed is a breeze. But honestly, you might forget about everything else once you catch a glimpse of the sea. The colors are unreal, the views are pure bliss, and the whole place just radiates that instant holiday happiness.

Agios Stefanos Beach is a hidden gem with a twist. Sure, the beach itself is stunning: soft sand, turquoise water, and views of ancient basilica ruins. But what really makes this spot special? That adorable little island just offshore: Kastri Island. Home to a picture-perfect white chapel, it’s the kind of place that looks like it came straight out of a postcard. You can easily paddle over there on a stand-up paddleboard. It’s a short trip, totally doable even if you’re new to SUP. And don’t forget your camera. This spot is made for Instagram.
Villages Full of Character

If you need a break from the beach scene, it’s time to explore Kos’s enchanting villages. Tucked away in hills or along the coast, each bursting with character and a laid-back vibe. Start with Zia, a postcard-perfect mountain village. Thanks to its hillside location it often feels cooler than the coast, a welcome relief on hot days. But the real magic happens at sunset, when the sky transforms into dreamy shades of orange, pink, and purple. Everyone finds a quiet spot along the old stone wall to soak it all in. A moment you won’t forget. Pro tip: book a table on the rooftop terrace at Oromedon. The menu features juicy lamb chops, creamy pligouri with chickpeas, spiced pork and tender steak that melts in your mouth. Don’t forget to raise your glass with a cheerful “Yamas!”

Looking for a village with a bit of everything? Say hello to Kardamena. Its long shopping street invites you for a leisurely stroll past colorful boutiques and tempting souvenir shops. Getting hungry? Grab a seat at one of the many tavernas or bars and enjoy a cold drink alongside traditional Greek dishes. From grilled halloumi to sizzling souvlaki, the flavors here taste even better in the sunshine. And don’t skip the harbor. It’s the ideal place to kick back, people-watch or even hop on a spontaneous boat trip. Chilled vibes, friendly faces and that salty sea breeze. What more do you need?

If a peaceful, authentic vibe is what you’re after, Mastichari might just steal your heart. This tranquil village feels like stepping back in time, with whitewashed houses, bright blue shutters, and colorful fishing boats gently bobbing in the harbor. Life here moves at a slower pace. Cozy tavernas right on the beach offer the smell of grilled fish mingling with the salty sea air, and locals greet you with warm smiles. Everything here whispers “relax.” No rush, no fuss — just genuine island charm.

And then there’s Kefalos — tucked away in the far south of Kos, where life feels just a little more peaceful. It’s quieter, less touristy and that’s exactly where its charm lies. Picture narrow winding streets, sleepy corners and a sun-drenched village square where time seems to slow down — in the best possible way. There’s something nostalgic about this place: cozy, unhurried and full of character. And the views? Absolutely stunning. From up here, the sea stretches out endlessly, sparkling in the sun and inviting you to just pause and take it all in.

Last but not least: Pyli. Tucked away inland, this mountain village is a hidden treasure off the usual tourist trail. Here, local life still thrives in all its slow, friendly glory. Stroll through the quiet streets and soak up the authentic vibe. Be sure to visit the Traditional House, a charming little museum where you can glimpse how Kos’s residents lived in days gone by. It’s a lovely step back in time and the perfect prelude to relaxing on a shaded terrace under the trees with a cool drink in hand.
